The Spatial Logic of Informal Urbanism (Book Launch)-InfUr seminar

This presentation took place on Wednesday 21st May 2025 with Kim Dovey and Reden Recio.

This presentation marks the publication of a book that grounds an understanding of global South cities in the ways informal urbanism works to sustain livelihoods. It reveals the interrelations and synergies between informal street vending, transport and settlement, and between these modes of production and the more formal city. The focus is on the spatial logic of these interrelations at multiple scales, as livelihoods are invented, rules are transgressed, and the spatial order becomes settled. This is a call to understand, research and engage with informal urbanism as far more than the inverse of the formal city.

Kim Dovey Co-Directs the Informal Urbanism Research Hub (InfUr-) at the University of Melbourne.

Reden Recio is an Associate Professor at University of the Philippines, Diliman – College of Social Work and Community Development, and an Honorary Research Fellow with InfUr-. He is widely published in leading academic journals in the fields of urban planning, informality, governance and development studies.
