Abstract: This seminar will explore a new approach to understanding urbanization in the ancient past – looking beyond the formal temples, palaces and plazas to the more informal neighbourhoods and districts of everyday life. It will include work from the forthcoming book: Urban Life in the Distant Past: The Prehistory of Energized Crowding.

Michael E. Smith is an archaeologist whose research interests include the Aztecs and comparative archaeology. He is Professor and Director of the Teotihuacan Research Laboratory at Arizona State University.
